Introducing Ridwell

Have you ever felt frustrated over all the things that can’t be recycled? Young Owen Metzger, age 6, was so disturbed that he took matters into his own hands. He persuaded his dad to help him find people who would take dead batteries and light bulbs and plastic wrap. This year they founded a family business called Ridwell to collect such items from around the area and deliver them to partners who will recycle them. When the news broke that they were open to subscribers on Mercer Island, Roberta contacted them to ask whether CCMI could be a community hub, receiving stuff from our members and the wider community. The answer was yes. Owen and his dad or mom make their rounds on a Monday every other week, and if we have items for them to pick up. They email to ask us whether we’ve got anything. Then we simply put our white Ridwell box outside the church doors. They exchange our full collection bags for empty ones. There are four basic categories they collect:

  • light bulbs (incandescent, LED, CFL, fluorescent)

  • threads (clothes, shoes, sheets, towels, fabric scraps that are too worn out for the thrift store)

  • batteries (alkaline, rechargeable, hearing aid, small electronics – not car batteries)

  • plastic wrapping (anything scrunchable, including Amazon mailers and bubble wrap)

And with each pickup, there is a special rotating category. Thanks to everyone who brought Halloween candy! It has gone to Birthday Dreams, a project that hosts birthday parties for homeless kids. Next time (Nov. 18) it will be small travel toiletries. The Ridwell box will live under the table in the Social Outreach area. You can bring your stuff anytime. Please make sure it is clean and dry. If you have questions, visit the website: www.ridwell.com.

Movie Discussion Group Friday, November 15 7:30 p.m. Let's go to the movies! November's movie is The Current War: The Director's Cut. Now playing at AMC Factoria, Regal Bella Bottega, and several other theaters.

Sock It to Homelessness Sock Drive: Until November 24th - We're collecting men's new white sport socks in the box near the church entrance. You can write a check to CCMI and put "Socks" on the memo line. Or, donate online on the CCMI website. Contact Terry Pepple
