Bake Sale for Panthera Tigers Forever

Please bring baked goods to sell this Sunday – and bring your money (and your friends)! William Moss, age 6 1/2, has asked for our support in saving the tigers. He chose Panthera Tigers Forever as the channel for his efforts. In addition to bake sales and lemonade stands, William has persuaded New Seasons Market to include Panthera as one of their three charities for six months starting August 15th. Please shop at New Seasons and carry your own bags. For each bag, they will give you a bean which you can use to vote for Panthera as a recipient of their charity funds.

Stressed in the face of many demands? Need reminding what it feels like to breathe, relax, and let go? How about meaningful conversation with people who get it? The church retreat takes place August 16-18 on the theme of “Play.” Comfortable accommodation and great food at the UCC’s Pilgrim Firs camp near Bremerton. Pick up a brochure from the entryway table or click here CCMI website. Please register by next Sunday, July 28th.

Memorial Service for Jane Marich Saturday, August 10 2:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 18 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Shelly Traverse will be giving a recital at our church. Details soon.

The Rev. Dr. Samuel Sawitski (1951- 2019)

We have received word of the death of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Sawitski. Sam was serving at the pastor of Desert Garden UCC in Sun City West, Arizona, and his memorial service will take place there next Sunday afternoon. We understand that he had been in poor health for some time and had been in hospice care. Sam was ordained into the priesthood of the Orthodox Church in Moscow. He also obtained a Doctorate in Ancient Ecclesiastical Art from the Kremlin Institute of Art, Research and Science in Moscow, a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Theology from Holy Trinity Seminary. He was an expert in Ecclesiastical Slavonic, Greek and Hebrew. After spending two years training in Sacred Theology and Eastern Spirituality of the Desert Fathers at the Holy Orthodox Monastery, Fr. Sam did postgraduate work at the Department of Psychiatry-Medical School in Moscow to prepare for a career as a Priest-Counselor Spiritual Director. He earned his licentiate in psychoanalysis, psychopathology, psychotherapy and cognitive therapy. He then became a professor, teaching at LeHigh University, Moravian Theological Seminary, Lancaster Theological Seminary and Mary Immaculate Seminary. In the 1980’s he left the world of academia and became a UCC minister. He served churches on the east coast for fifteen years. During this time, he headed up the challenging task of re-building his home church, St. Lukes, which had been destroyed by a fire. In addition to creating the stained glass windows for the sanctuary, he also built and voiced their new pipe organ. He served as pastor of our church from 2003 until 2008.
