8:00 a.m. - Highway clean-up. Committee meets at church at 8:00, drives to the Bellevue Way exit on I-90, and picks up trash. This usually takes about an hour. The more hands, the faster the work gets done!

Message from the Minister

What a great day we had in Olympia yesterday! I was one of over 500 climate activists who participated in an Environmental Lobby Day, with 45 of Washington's 49 legislative districts represented. We met at the United Churches (UCC and Presbyterian) which is located across the street from the capitol, and we filled every corner of the building. We started with a bit of training, where we learned that we would probably be meeting with legislative assistants rather than our actual senators and representatives.

That was indeed the case. We lobbied Representatives Tana Senn and My-Linh Thai and Senator Lisa Wellman representing Mercer Island, and I also visited the offices of my two representatives from Renton.

The sun was shining as we gathered on the steps of the capitol for

stirring speeches from Gov. Inslee and several of the main climate advocates from the legislature. Then it was time to show support for the Senate

Energy, Environment, and Technology Committee as they met to consider amendments to the 100% Clean Energy resolution. Our Senator Wellman is a member of that committee, so I saw her in action.

Our meetings with the various legislative aides were short and focused.Our legislators were already supportive of the causes on our list (clean energy, Orca support, oil spill prevention, and plastics reduction) and in some cases had co-sponsored the bills. What we wanted, however, was that climate change should rise to the top of their priorities, affecting their actions and decisions across the whole range of issues before them. It was good to discuss how we could support them to take robust stands on our

behalf.

I'm sure there will be more opportunities in the future. Let me know if you would like to come with me next time.

Last Sunday the Moderator's gavel passed from Gail Layman to Cheryl Malcham. Many thanks to Gail for her dedicated and energetic service. And to Cheryl, glad to have you on board, we are all here for you!

Donate Used Flip Flops

Last week to donate used flip flops! If you have used flip flops around

the house, particularly kid and teenager sizes, bring them to church. The children are tracking how Jesus grew up, and are using flip flops for a visual depiction of his growth.
